Why wood fence?

Natural beauty of wood, durability of steel

While we can install wood fences with traditional wood posts, we strongly recommend using galvanized steel posts from MasterHalco for the best durability. Unlike wood set in the ground, steel posts won’t rot, shift, or weaken over time. This upgrade gives your wood fence a stronger foundation and significantly extends its lifespan, while still allowing you to enjoy the natural look of wood.

Wood Fence Installation Process in Roanoke, VA

  • We start by visiting your property to confirm fence layout, gate placement, and overall design. This includes verifying property lines, checking slopes and grade changes, and planning post spacing for stability. Utilities are located before digging to ensure a safe and accurate installation.

  • Posts are the foundation of your fence, so we dig holes at least 30 inches deep, and dig even deeper for fences taller than 6 feet. Proper post spacing and depth ensure long-term stability and prevent leaning or sagging over time.

  • If you choose to have galvanized steel posts installed, posts are driven directly into the ground using specialized equipment instead of digging holes. This method is faster and resist frost heave. It also makes for a cleaner install plus you get the added durability and longevity of steel posts!

  • Posts are plumbed, aligned, and braced while concrete sets. We allow sufficient curing time before attaching rails to ensure a solid, durable fence structure that will last for years.

  • Horizontal rails are attached between posts to create the fence frame. Typically, we use three rails for a 6-foot privacy fence and secure them with exterior-grade fasteners. We follow the grade to ensure a smooth, beautiful fence

  • Pickets are installed individually to create your fence panels. We adjust spacing and height along slopes so the fence follows the terrain naturally while maintaining a clean, professional appearance. Typically, we leave a 1-2” gap below your pickets to avoid absorbing ground water and allow for drainage, protecting your pickets over time.

  • Gates are reinforced with heavy-duty hinges, proper latches, and anti-sag bracing. Proper gate installation prevents sagging and ensures smooth, long-lasting operation.

  • After installation, we remove debris, double-check alignment, and test all gates. Finally, we walk through the project to ensure satisfaction and answer any questions you may have
